30-03-18 UPDATE

It was quite a shock been given notice from our previous premises and taking on a new commercial unit, with all the legal stuff, was quite a trauma, as well as all the added expense. Some of you saw us in Wales for the Christmas Fayre which was a truly fantastic weekend meeting and greeting with those at the fayre and then mucking in at the Rescue on the Sunday whilst packing lots of new gift shop items that we were taken back to Hampshire and Billericay. Two van loads came back from Wales and it was fantastic – we had next to no stock after running it down from the previous shop so new shop, new stock, new beginnings.
Although we had unofficially opened before the Wales weekend – once we got back things went into overdrive with a visit from our local Mayor, photographer, some MT supporters along with some MT adopted dogs and quite a few of the locals. The shop took off and December was a fabulous month.
Then came our first rent bill and without going into the full financials, we handed over Q1 2018 rent. Happy days as we covered this nicely and still had change but more bills to pay. Next alarming bill was that for Business Rates – November to March 2018 - £1500! Third bill was the shop insurance via the landlords - £400. Hey ho, we knew it was going to be a costly project and we were still happy that there was money coming in. We decided to sit tight until we’d raised the Q2 rent, sussed out the utility charges and got an idea of our daily income. Plus one other drawback was the beast from the East which did close us for a couple of days due to snowfall so customers were scarce. At the end of the day, you all know that we are independent volunteers that have taken this on with huge personal risk but we love what we are doing and have every faith that we have a good recipe for raising some much needed funds for Many Tears. What we don’t love is doubt in what we are doing and sadly we’ve also had a bit of that too.
So, if I’ve not bored you by now, here is the exciting bit. Today we transferred…..drum roll…………. £6,008.84 to the rescue. I’d be lying if I said this was all of the money available but we do need to hold back a bit for a rainy day or van breakdown etc. (Last time the van broke down, Allison, daughter (heavily pregnant), granddaughter and dog in the van and it was -6! Broken alternator - £400! 3 hours to recover with me doing emergency runs with flasks and blankets). All ended well and no visits to AandE or maternity ward were needed.
We’ve had amazing support from the local community with heaps of donations coming through the doors on a weekly basis. Luckily for us too, we retained all but one of our volunteers from the previous shop but have gained another so the dream team is still very strong and dedicated. These are the people that need the thanks – they give up their free time and tirelessly sort through donations in the shop, make our customer a hot drink and keep smiling.

08-04-18 Many Tears just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone involved with the second-hand shop. It has been an amazing help to us with the funds raised and we truly grateful to everyone who has helped it be such a success.
